New York closed out the series in Game Four, scoring six times against Johan Santana in the top of the fourth inning, en route to posting an 8-1 victory. In the Twins' half of the fourth inning center fielder Torii Hunter singled to left, catcher A.J. Pierzynski singled to second, moving Hunter to third. Dh Michael Cuddyer then singled to center scoring Hunter for Minnesota's only run of the game. Shortstop Derek Jeter homered, in the ninth inning for New York, while David Wells allowed the Twins just the one run on eight hits over
72⁄3 innings. The win enabled the Yankees to advance to the ALCS for the fifth time in six years. The Yankees defeated the Red Sox in the ALCS but were defeated by the Florida Marlins in the 2003 World Series.
